Is it OK for a man to wear a neck tie with a short-sleeved shirt?
Wow, that many answers in such a short time. Except for the jerk who made the "retarted" coment they've been helpful.
Let me add to this that I live in SC where it is HOT most of the year. Also, this is not for work it's for a casual dress style church.

May 9th, 2009
yes if he is going to wear a jacket with it.
May 9th, 2009
No, I don't think that's a good idea. It just won't look right!!
May 9th, 2009
In some business situations where a tie is required, then yes. Some wear a short sleeve shirt under their jacket. I admit it does not look very attractive though. But when it's really hot out, and a tie is mandatory, you can't blame these guys!
May 9th, 2009
yes, I did for 25 years working for Xerox
May 9th, 2009
I have to wear a tie and dress shirt to work every day, plus I use to sell mens suits, and That is the dumbest looking thing to wear is a short sleeve dress shirt with a tie. I would never do it. It would just feel silly doing that.
May 9th, 2009
Mr. Rogers excluded (because he is my hero and the laws of fashion are irrelevant), NO, men shouldn't wear ties w/ss shirts.
May 9th, 2009
absolutely not…are you retarded?
May 9th, 2009
nah that looks ridiculous.. like a little boy playing dress up.
May 9th, 2009
I think it's ok for him to wear a tie with a short sleeve shirt if it's hot weather.
May 9th, 2009
Yes, if he wears a jacket over it. In that case, how can you tell. But never with a t-shirt.
May 9th, 2009
yes but not without a jacket
May 9th, 2009
Neck ties are Ugly and pointless…
As a woman you know what i find to be sexy?
I like an 18th century suit on a man, they wore neck ties
but different kind, it was either a ruffly top or a giant bow
that hung all the way down the chest.VERY SEXY!!
Or for a more modern look, I like the collarless dress shirts
you know the ones where the collar buttons together
and there is nothing hangs over, that is SEXY! Plus
wear it with some nice professional brown leather
suspenders and some slacks. NO JACKET MMMM!!!
Very sharp VERY SEXY!
Briseis
May 9th, 2009
YES
May 9th, 2009
No, it's horrible!
I have to laugh at the answer from xjoizey – that is EXACTLY the look I would expect of someone at Xerox.
May 9th, 2009
If your in Retail.
I would not do it as I hate that look.
May 9th, 2009
I would say that it's ok, because it's not a bad fashion for guys and sometimes girls
May 9th, 2009
No, short sleeved shirts are informal, you'll look like Homer Simpson and that's a big faux pass
May 9th, 2009
Yeah, as long as he wears a sport jacket over the shirt.
May 9th, 2009
Depends on the profession, the area you're in, and the image you are trying to convey.
I do it all the time, but when I go to court, I have a jacket over it and nobody is any the wiser because my short sleeve shirts are not the casual print types, but solids.
If you are a salesperson, engineer, or some other profession with more relaxed dress codes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a short sleeve pattern with a matching tie, but if you're a professional, I would recommend against it and go with the solids.
Next, what type of area are you in? If you're kinda country, nobody's too concerned, so go for it. If you're city or suburban, you're probably correct to be concerned and I'd follow the above rules.
Lastly, what type of image are you trying to convey? If you're trying to convey the professional, no-nonsense look, go solids in conservative colors. Approachable, but still professional, solids in more relaxed colors and maybe some striped. Relaxed professional not concerned about what others think, whatever the heck you please.
Hope this helps.
May 9th, 2009
billie joe armstrong does it. y not u
May 9th, 2009
u can, but u would look like a dork
May 9th, 2009
No.
May 9th, 2009
It might be okay in today's popular opinion, but please…..don't. No matter how I look at it, it's just wrong. It just isn't very cool, or classy. Save your reputation here, at least a little and wear a long sleeve shirt with the tie, or leave the tie off & unbutton the top button on a short sleeve shirt and go casual.
May 9th, 2009
YES!!! If it's hot wear short sleeeve shirt and a tee shirt under it
May 9th, 2009
Not really, but it depends on your work situation.
I wear socks with my sandals, and these yahoos on yahoo answers tore me one too.
You know what I say? WHO CARES! We all look the same before we were born and after we die.
May 9th, 2009
IMHO, no…looks silly (unless you want to scream to the world that you're 16 years old). Neck ties go with long sleeve shirts.
May 9th, 2009
i would never date a man who wore a tie with a short sleeve shirt its dorky
May 9th, 2009
Wearing a tie with a short sleeved shirt is ok if your co-workers do the same. It's also ok if you are wearing a jacket with the shirt. Long sleeves do look better, but sometimes long sleeves aren't practical.
May 9th, 2009
If they look good in it and u have a nice body..then sure
go for it
May 9th, 2009
You'll see it sometimes in exceedingly hot climates….it's usually acceptable in that situation.
Or if you're flogging electronics. Or on schoolboys.
It makes me think of male strippers for some reason.
May 9th, 2009
Sure you can however why would you want to?
May 9th, 2009
NO! THATS PRETTY MUCH THE WORST FASHION MISTAKE YOU CAN MAKE!!!!!!!!!
May 9th, 2009
i hate ties but hell if you like it do it
May 9th, 2009
don't do it!!! please don't do it…
however, for warmer months/areas/states (i'm in the south…its hot here!) we normally suggest all cotton shirts…don't mess around with blends at all…they aren't great in this hot climate. also, you may just reconsider the tie all the way around….god doesn't really care what you wear just as long as you are there
May 9th, 2009
id say only if it has a collar. please never wear a tie with a t shirt ?
May 9th, 2009
It's absolutely okay! It's more than okay!
It's kinda saddening how people are stuck in age-old formalities. "Red blouses go with red skirts and red shoes." "Don't wear white after labor day." "Stripes don't go with plaid." Geez. People, abandon the old and try adopting something new.
Anyway, with the right haircut, right pants (straight leg and slightly snug around the thighs), and shoes, a slim man can look very dashing in this outfit. Very Dior Homme. Trust me on this. You can even check it out online.
I recommend a white or a pastel blue shirt and a solid SKINNY tie. Don't wear the regular wide ties, go buy some skinny ties! A wide tie would overwhelm a short-sleeved shirt.
Kudos for stepping out of the box! Hedi Slimane will be proud of you!
