    If you hold the tie up, it won't twist.
    It'll be made of a better quality silk.
    It'll come from a better brand.
    The absolute best ties are made strictly by folding silk, and have no lining.

    Bad quality ones are thin and flimsy, and fray very easily.
    Good ones are the opposite, and and thicker, and dont fray.

    With the good ones, you will be able to feel the quality

    It should be made from 100% silk. A good eye for fashion helps with choosing color and pattern. If unsure, look in a shop like Brooks Brothers, Ben Silver, etc., and peruse their selection. They are expensive lines, but you are buying label. I have found great ties (Ralph Lauren Polo label, being one) in places like T.J. Maxx for $12.99, etc.
