Did wearing a scarf on neck in 1950's w/tie on certain show your relationship status,…?

…like steady or single?
I think I heard that in the 1950’s if a girl wore a scarf around their neck you could tell if she was single or going steady by which side the knot was on…has anyone heard this and if so what does each side mean?

While he was in Germany, he’d accidentally chosen an attire that said "homosexual" to others who were homosexuals (which explained that odd conversation at the train station.) In other words, such things as "how the scarf is worn" might mean something to someone, but not to everyone, certainly not to those who haven’t heard of that communication method. I’d heard that the flower on the left side of the head meant available and on the right side of the head meant married, and I could have that backwards, too.

Just a fashion statement.Girls wore boys class or other ring on chain around their necks or Varsity jacket to show they were going steady.
