Originated in Croatia
The word "’cravat" is derived from the word “Croat” and neckties are descended from what those Croatians wore
The necktie, or kravata, is Croatia’s contribution to the world of fashion. The use of the necktie in Croatia dates back to as early as the mid-1600s. During the European Thirty Year War (1618-1648), Croatian soldiers were also drawn into battle and sent to fight in various regions of Europe. At that time, the traditional Croatian military dress included a picturesque scarf tied around the neck in a manner which is very similar to the style in which the necktie is worn today…

dunno. But during the 18 and 1900’s, those who had the money to dress nicely would wear this strings around their necks and make a bow out of it. But I before that I bet the older version of the neck tie would of been the cords used to keep the cape on their backs and so not to chafe the neck they would need something like collars. Hope that answers your question.

The Necktie Origin or neck tie history dates back a mere hundred years or so, for they came into existence as the direct result of a war. In 1660, in celebration of its hard fought victory over Turkey, a crack regiment from Croatia (then part of the Austro Hungarian Empire) visited Paris. There, the soldiers were presented as glorious heroes to Louis XIV, a monarch well known for his eye toward personal adornment. It so happened that the officers of this regiment were wearing brightly colored handkerchiefs fashioned of silk around their necks. These neck cloths, which probably descended from the Roman fascalia worn by orators to warm the vocal chords, struck the fancy of the king, and he soon made them an insignia of royalty as he created a regiment of Royal Cravattes. The word "cravat," incidentally, is derived from the word "Croats."
